Khansaheb, Interserve’s associate construction business in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), helps its employees learn new skills and develop their careers at its specialist in-house training school in Dubai.
Opened in March 2014, the Khansaheb Training Centre last year delivered over 65,000 training days and runs a full trades training curriculum, taught by Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) qualified tutors. The centre trains 160 employees each month on a 12 day structured curriculum for each trade. So far, over 1,700 of our people have already benefited from the programme, with a total of 2,000 expected to undertake the training in the future.
The training centre aims to open up new career opportunities for Khansaheb’s people and to reward talent within the business, while teaching employees about new technologies and how to work more efficiently.
The ‘hands-on’ curriculum covers key site skills such as masonry, block-laying, plastering, tiling and paving, steel fixing, carpentry and supervisory skills. Health and safety is also a critical component of the training programme, with demonstrations, tutorials and collaborative learning sessions on safe working practices.
Since the school’s inception, construction site managers have begun to notice a steady increase in the quality of work and health and safety performance. However, the most significant change witnessed after launching was the dramatic increase in employee engagement, with a clear increase in the pride shown in workmanship, motivation and teamwork of those who had trained at the centre.
Peter Smith, training centre manager, said: “I am very proud of what we have achieved and the feedback from those who take part in the training is always very good. If people enjoy work it always makes it a bit easier too, and I’m pleased to say that seems to be the case.”
