Helping people back into employment #1: Sarah and Berkley’s

Sarah Mahmood - Working Futures success storyIt’s hard to believe that the feisty and confident young lady, Sarah Mahmood, was until recently totally lacking in confidence and self-esteem following a period of unemployment.

However, says the Bradford-born 24-year old, the turnaround in her life is: “Entirely down to Interserve Working Futures and the company I now work for – Berkley’s Solicitors in Bradford!”

Berkley’s are well known as personal injury and insurance claims experts. Practice director Tahir Mahmud says the company is “expansion-minded” and looking to employ up to ten further staff – working closely with Interserve Working Futures to find and attract the very best talent.

“We want people with good communications skills and Interserve is helping us find exactly the right candidates; it takes away the headache of recruitment for us, and the whole process is hassle-free… Sarah is a perfect example of the service and quality of Work Programme candidates provided to us by Interserve Working Futures!,” he says.

Low point

Sarah commented that following 12 months of unemployment her confidence was beginning to fall apart.

“I’d had previous call-centre experience and thoroughly enjoyed that role but my period of unemployment had brought me to a low point…All that changed when I was referred to the Work Programme!”

Interserve Working Futures and work coach, Usman Suleman, worked closely with Sarah – enhancing her CV, interview skills and self-confidence techniques.

Sarah says: “Usman recognised my potential and drilled into me a ‘You Can Do It’ attitude – boosting my self-confidence and determination to get back to work.”

Back on track

Sarah says she has “always been ambitious” and has her eyes firmly on a management position within this progressive legal practice:

“It’s been amazing. The directors here are pushing me to succeed and, do you know what? I’m going to get there! Berkley’s obviously trust Interserve Working Futures to deliver the right candidates and I was offered a job the day after my first interview there. I can’t thank Interserve and Berkley’s enough for getting my life back on track!”

I am very happy with Sarah. But I would like to work as well. I think that as a Quantity Surveyor with 10 years working in this sector it should not be so difficult to get a job

I am happy for Sarah and glad she got the support she needed to get back into work. Interserve is a company that pride itself in it effort and provision to help members of staff develop themselves within their working environment. it would be really helpful to know what area and sector of staff are being developed, I have been an interserve for a year plus now and I have not received any form of training or gotten any personal development plan apart from the one I have made for myself. From an ethical point of view its a sad sorry. we read all this success stories of other staffs getting awarded for one thing or the other and the bottom feeds those of us that does the hard graft and are on the frontline don’t get recognised. Frontline staff are ambassadors of the company we are this first point of contact to the outside world but within the organisation we are the lowest of lows on the perking other. Would be nice if this issue can be addressed but very much doubt it
